Video: GPUs and HPC: A Match Made in Heaven or is the Devil in the Details?
No question where NVIDIA stands. Watch the video. But others have misgivings.
NVIDIA president and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang describes the promise and power of new NVIDIA Maximus technology, which was announced on November 14th, in his keynote address to Supercomputing 2011 attendees on Tuesday, November 15th, in Seattle, Wash.
As the inventor of GPUs and the creator of the CUDA developer toolkit, NVIDIA's enthusiasm is understandable. But others we talked to on the SC11 exhibit floor wondered how large companies that have invested heavily in non-GPU HPC hardware and are running either internally developed code or commercial solvers that have been developed without GPUs in mind will deal with the technology. Ditto for the ISVs who may have problems running their code on the new hybrid systems. A work in progress.
