CD-adapco’s STAR Global Conference 2012 A Sell Out: Focus on Simulation and Analysis

<img style="float: left;" src="http://media2.hpcwire.com/dmr/STAR_conf._hotel.jpg" alt="" width="99" height="61" />The show will host over 50 commercial engineering specialists and expert panels. Many large manufacturers will be on hand, but the conference promises to provide a wealth of information for smaller companies that want to take advantage of advanced manufacturing techniques supported by HPC. And, for the first time in CD-adapco Conference history, the event is completely sold out with record high attendance.

On March 19-21, CD-adapco will host its STAR Global Conference 2012 in Noordwijk aan Zee, The Netherlands at the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin.

With only a couple weeks to go, the conference is completely sold out.

"Our STAR Conferences have always been very popular," said CD-adapco's VP of Marketing, David Vaughn. "However, even we were overwhelmed with the sheer number of registrations for our first STAR Global Conference which has more that doubled that of any previous CD-adapco Conference."

The record attendance has been prompted by an agenda that includes over 50 presentations from industrial leaders in engineering simulation, each of whom will reveal the secrets of their engineering successes. The conference will include an open discussion with a specially selected panel of experts including analysts, media and innovative industrial users.

The line up of topics and companies participating covers a wide range of endeavors, with a heavy emphasis on manufacturing.  Here’s a representative sample:

  • Aerospace – Airbus Military, Lockheed Martin, SAROV Engineering Center
  • Automotive – BMW, Ford Australia and Ford Europe, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz
  • Building and Environment – Active Space Technologies, Gruner
  • Chemistry and Combustion – Cottbus University
  • Electrification – Battery Design, GM Opel, Nissan
  • Energy – B&B-AGEMA, BMA, SAROV
  • Marine - Heerema Marine Contractors Nederland B.V., Sirehna, Team Challenge Italia, Wartsila Global R&D
  • Oil and Gas – Atkins, Kongsberg Devotek AS, MSI Kenny
  • Powertrain - Behr GmbH & Co. KG, Epsilon Development Centre West, Fluid dynamics division, Technical University of Vienna / BMW Steyr
  • Processing - Aerotherm Computational Dynamics, FS Dynamics,Tetra Pak
  • Sports - Cervelo, Intelligent Light
  • Turbo Machinery – Mechanical Solutions, MTU Friedrichshafen

You will notice that there are some very big manufacturers taking part in the conference. You have to wonder if   advanced manufacturing techniques based on high performance computing can be employed exclusively by major corporations that have the deep pockets and in-house talent to take advantage of the new technologies?

We put that question to David Vaughn, who indicated the the small to medium sized manufacturers can get in on the action. Commenting on the conference in general and small companies in particular, Vaughn said,
"With presenters from around the globe, this year's STAR Global Conference is shaping up to be the largest event in CD-adapco history. The conference provides an excellent opportunity for simulation engineers from all industries to network and share their success stories.

“The agenda will have something for everyone,” he added. “Small organizations will get big company insight on reducing cost and improving development times. For small companies, these savings have a direct impact on the bottom line. I'm especially anticipating a very intriguing panel discussion on the need for continued technology innovation in engineering simulation to tackle the challenges that lie ahead."

Keynote from Cervélo Co-founder

The keynote speakers for this year's conference will be Phil White, co-founder of Cervélo. "I am delighted that Phil has agreed to deliver our keynote this year. Cervélo's journey from the university lab to the front of the professional peleton was fueled largely by engineering simulation; their story is the perfect embodiment of our "a World of Engineering Success" conference theme," said Bill Clark, Senior VP of Operations, CD-adapco."With a presentation titled, 'The Importance of Innovation in a Competitive World,' Phil will share the company's comprehensive approach to design, simulation, and analysis and how it can put you in front of the competition."

(See the related story on Cervélo's use of simulation for bicycle design in today's Off the Wire.)

In addition to the companies mentioned above, in attendance will be over 20 industrial technology partners and sponsors. CD-adapco's engineering simulation specialists, developers and management will also be on hand to meet and network with attendees.

The full agenda can be viewed on the conference website: http://www.cd-adapco.com/downloads/newsletters/2012/conference/index2.html.

In addition to the conference, attendees may choose from a selection of training events and workshops, including STAR-CCM+ v7 Orientation Training, Best Practices in Turbulence and Heat Transfer Modeling, and Meshing and Surface Preparation. There will also be dedicated workshops for ICE (Internal Combustion Engines), Chemical, Battery Design, and Electric Motors.

Attendees will learn the secret of how to use CAE more effectively in their organization, perform more simulations for less effort, and begin exploring the whole design space rather than a few points. They will leave the event with a complete understanding of the business benefits of simulation and realistic implementation strategies for their organization whether large or small.
