Now is the Time for Digital Manufacturing at Home

Makerbot recently announced the Replicator 2.0, a brand new digital manufacturing device with a larger build plate, coated metal chassis, and improved software as well as better print resolution.   Now is the time to get digital manufacturing capability at home.

A major improvement from the 2009 version is the increased size of the printout.  Replicator 2.0 can produce an object 37 percent larger than the older version - up to 410 cubic inches (11.2” L x 6.0” W x 6.1” H).  Another important improvement is the level of detail—the printer creates the object in layers - and the 100-micron thickness of each layer is so fine you can hardly see them.  No more rough edges that need sanding either.  The software upgrades have also resulted in jobs being processes 20 times faster.  The machine is also optimized for PLA bioplastic.

And we know that these machines are becoming mainstream with an opening of a Makerbot retail space in New York City.  The starting price for version 2.0 is $2,199 and is available online and in the store.  At these prices and performance, its time for small businesses and individuals to make the investment which will pay for itself in short order.
