SGI Servers Utilizing Latest Intel Xeon Processor

SGI announced availability for the new Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 v3 product family across SGI’s industry-leading server line for high performance computing. SGI also achieved performance world records for Intel’s newest processor, which is SGI’s fourth title for new Intel releases. Featured on SGI ICE XSGI InfiniteData Cluster and SGI Rackable servers, E5-2600 v3 processors further increase performance, energy efficiency, and security to enable greater innovation and insight for SGI’s broad range of customers.

Imperial College London Nearly Doubles Performance

Rated among the world’s top universities, Imperial College London required an upgrade to its advanced computing solution for students and researchers to conduct course work and research that depend on complex process modelling and simulation. Having selected SGI ICE X with the Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 v3, the university is seeing a significant increase in computational power available to Imperial College’s scientific research community, enabling much larger and more detailed problems to be simulated and analyzed in fields of computational chemistry, materials science and bioinformatics. Specifically, based on initial testing at Imperial College done by researchers running SPARKLE — a code for the direct numerical simulation of incompressible turbulent flow that has been ported to various supercomputing platforms throughout Europe — users have achieved a near double performance improvement compared to their previous system.

“Imperial College London is at the pinnacle of groundbreaking research and a recognized leader in a number of scientific fields,” said Simon Burbidge, HPC manager at Imperial. “The testing of the new SGI system upgrade in our HPC facility has already shown an almost doubled performance when running one of our major scientific research problems. We look forward to seeing the impact across all our academic research fields that make use of HPC.”

New World Record Benchmark

“Continuing SGI’s performance leadership, we’re excited to have attained world record Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) MPI2007 benchmarks for the E5-2600 v3 processor using the world’s fastest supercomputer, SGI ICE X. These benchmarks reflect the performance advantage our customers can anticipate using SGI servers with Intel processors in real-world high performance computing environments,” said Jorge Titinger, president and CEO, SGI.

“Whether utilized in fluid dynamics research, ocean sciences, or geospatial intelligence, seismic studies or any other high-order computing activity, SGI is proud to partner with Intel in delivering leading-edge solutions for the world’s biggest challenges,” Titinger added.

“The new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v3 product family is designed to deliver the best combination or performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness,” said Charles Wuischpard, vice president Data Center Group and general manager of Workstations and HPC, Intel. “The combination of the new microarchitecture features including new instructions, greater core density, and high speed DDR4 memory support will deliver the performance and efficiency needed for a wide range of HPC applications and enable unprecedented discoveries by research and industry.”
