Obsidian Announces Plan for New Platform

Global network traffic now exceeds two exabytes per day and continued growth will be fueled in part by new models such as cloud computing and internationally distributed data-intensive science programs. To address ongoing and future data transport infrastructure challenges, Obsidian Strategics announced today plans for a new platform that will complement its existing 10 and 40Gbits/s product offerings.

Obsidian is recasting supercomputer technology to drive Wide Area Networks with unprecedented efficiency.

  • Legacy networks no longer sustainable – TCP/IP and Ethernet have become the workhorses of the Internet, yet were created more than 40 years ago when network speeds were over one million times slower and use cases looked very different. Severe performance penalties are already being paid at high data rates.
  • Demonstrating the feasibility of the 400Gbits/s platform – Obsidian demonstrates a continued commitment to deliver modern, extremely efficient supercomputer-class technologies into the telecommunications space. In the spirit of its existing Longbow and Crossbow products operating at 40Gbits/s, its 100G and 400G platforms will also provide enhanced InfiniBand features such as cryptographic and routing functions for real-world deployability into complex and security critical network environments.
  • InfiniBand purist selected to present at EmTech Singapore – Chief visionary officer Dr. David Southwell will present an alternative technology solution, originally developed for military applications, that combines an advanced standards-based supercomputer interconnect with state-of-the-art optical wide area technology. He will participate in the Next-Gen Urban Development and Sensible Cities program on January 28 at 11:50am.

Dr. David Southwell, chief visionary officer, Obsidian Strategics, said, "In a world where data usage is increasing exponentially, telcos and service providers are looking for solutions that will ease the strain being placed on today's infrastructure. Our 400Gbits/s platform represents a continued commitment to deliver modern, extremely efficient supercomputer-class technologies into the telecommunications space."
