HPCwire Reveals Winners of the 2015 Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards at SC15 in Austin

AUSTIN, Tex., Nov. 16 -- HPCwire, the leading publication for news and information for the high performance computing industry, announced the winners of the 2015 HPCwire Readers' and Editors' Choice Awards at the Supercomputing Conference (SC15) taking place this week in Austin, TX. Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications Inc., unveiled the list of winners just before the opening gala reception.

"To be selected for an HPCwire Readers’ Choice Award shows not only reflects the tremendous impact an organization or individual has had high performance computing, but also signifies recognition from most influential and constituents members of the advanced-scale computing space," said John Russell, Director of Editorial for Tabor Communications and Managing Editor of HPCwire. "Each year we’re honored to engage with our readership and the larger HPC industry through the Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, and 2015 has been a tremendous year. We're extremely grateful to pay tribute to all of the award winners for the outstanding developments, achievements, and breakthroughs they’ve accomplished, and we’d like to offer the highest thanks congratulations to everyone who took part in our 2015 awards program.”

HPCwire has designated two categories of Awards: (1) Readers' Choice, where winners have been determined through election by HPCwire readers, and (2) Editors' Choice, where winners have been selected by a panel of HPCwire editors. The process started with an open nomination process, with voting taking place throughout the month of September. These awards are widely recognized as being among the most prestigious recognition given by the HPC community to its own each year.

Adding Outstanding Leadership in HPC to the Awards

This year, for the first time, HPCwire will present an award recognizing an individual’s overall efforts to advance high performance computing as an industry. For the inaugural Outstanding Leadership in HPC Award HPCwire will be honoring four innovators in HPC: two winners from the Readers’ Choice voting, and two winners from the Editors’ Choice panel.

HPCwire readers voted to present awards to both Jack Dongarra, American University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, author of the LINPACK and High Performance Conjugate Gradient (HPCG) benchmarks, and co-editor of the TOP500 list; as well as Professor Satoshi Matsuoka, a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology (TiTech) and leader of the TSUBAME series of supercomputers, for their remarkable contributions to the high performance computing community.

For the inaugural Editors’ Choice Award, the HPCwire editorial panel elected to honor the legacies of late HPC luminaries Hans Meuer and George Michael. Hans Meuer is remembered for founding the International Supercomputing Conference as well as the TOP500 list, as well as being instrumental for uniting the high performance computing community in Europe. George Michael, a computational physicist at Lawrence Livermore, left his mark with the founding of the annual supercomputing conference where his memory will be celebrated this year with this Editors’ Choice Award.
