Deloitte PopulationMiner Digs into Healthcare Landscape
To offer data analytics to life sciences researchers in need of information from broad patient populations to answer questions about complex disease and drug interactions, Deloitte has announced the upcoming release of PopulationMiner, which is schedule for release in November.
To this end, Deloitte is working with Intermountain Healthcare, a Utah-based nonprofit systems of over 200 hospitals and clinics, to draw upon their data warehouse of clinical, financial and operational information that can be used to help identify which treatments promise patients the best outcome. By using PopulationMiner, life sciences organizations can take a deeper look into patient data to investigate trends associated with disease type, stage and comorbid conditions.
“With the shift towards value-based, personalized care, it’s key for life-sciences decision makers to have deep insight into complex, real-world populations,” explains Brett Davis, principal for Deloitte Consulting LLP and general manager of Deloitte Health Informatics.
From a clinical standpoint, Deloitte anticipates that the tool could be used to more quickly generate hypotheses based on biomarkers found through laboratory testing. Meanwhile, it expects researchers will use PopulationMiner for applications ranging from drug development to safety testing, and health outcome studies.
In addition, the tool can be used for populations of patients suffering from two or more conditions simultaneously to study the interaction of the diseases as well as their treatments.
“This application is designed to provide insights into a broad range of medical conditions and clinical care. These insights can be leveraged to develop novel research hypotheses and to suggest effective approaches to answering these research questions,” says Peter Haug, director of the Homer Warner Center for Informatics Research at Intermountain Healthcare. “It should provide a tool for seeking answers to difficult health-care questions in large collections of clinical data.”
Tools such as PopulationMiner are key for accountable care organizations, whose reimbursement is delivered based on reductions in total cost of care and patient outcomes, says Scott Kolesar, leader of Deloitte’s Value-based Care practice. “PopulationMiner aims to provide organizations with an integrated comparative analytics platform so that they can discover opportunities to dramatically enhance the quality of care delivery while reducing costs.”
