Merle Giles’ Book Dives into Global Best Practices for Industrial HPC

Nothing teaches like experience. A new book from co-editors Merle Giles and Dr. Anwar Osseyran, Industrial Applications of High-Performance Computing: Best Global Practices, takes readers on a lesson-filled tour of HPC deployment in industry. Giles and Osseyran provide an overview of HPC technology, an examination of HPC practices worldwide, and a compilation of HPC case histories across most industry segments.

“We felt a book like this, examining real-world HPC application experience by geography and industry was missing and would be extremely valuable as more enterprises begin taking advantage of HPC technologies,” said Giles. Topics discussed include software challenges, business models, access models (e.g., cloud computing), public-private partnerships, simulation and modeling, visualization, big data analysis, and governmental and industrial influence.

Many will recognize the editors from their long association with the supercomputing and HPC community. Giles is director of the Private Sector Program at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Dr. Osseyran is professor of Business Analytics and Computer Science at the University of Amsterdam. The new book is a compilation of articles written by authors with domain expertise and edited by Giles and Dr. Osseyran.
